Pikkoo launches public beta, offers first social community for user generated interactive mobile screensavers & wallpapers05.12.09

Pikkoo takes mobile personalization to the next level with social, user generated and interactive mobile content

Oulu, Finland, 12th May 2009 – Pikkoo, an innovative Finnish startup, today launched its highly-anticipated public beta product, offering the first community for user generated mobile screensavers and wallpapers. Pikkoo enables anyone to create, download and share interactive mobile screensavers and wallpapers for free. Functionality added to the content through widgets such as time, battery and signal strength, using an easy-to-use online interface.

Mobile screensavers and wallpapers are very popular, reaching millions of screens every day. However, they lack the richness and personalization demanded from today’s consumers. Utilizing Adobe Flash® Platform and its own proprietary technologies, Pikkoo makes personalization and rich interfaces possible for the widest set of mobiles available today. Besides an online community to end users, Pikkoo also provides a novel marketing platform for brands and creative marketers.

“I’m really excited to see Pikkoo launch their new service, it’s a fantastic example of the Flash Platform’s ability to enrich user experiences. With this new product Pikkoo users can create rich Flash Lite content and share their work on social networks like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter”, says Mark Doherty, Platform Evangelist for Mobile and Devices at Adobe.

Pikkoo launched its private beta in November 2008. Before the public beta launch, Pikkoo received an award at London Smartphone Show 2008 from a jury including Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Orange and Symbian, and the Judge’s Choice Award for Nokia Calling All Innovators 2008 contest.

How to protect Flash Lite content with OMA DRM 1.0 Forward Lock for Symbian SIS installers05.08.09

Alessandro found a great solution to protect Flash Lite content with OMA DRM 1.0 forward lock for S60 Symbian SIS installers, and prepared a tutorial. Kudos!

The idea is pretty simple but it took sometime to get it done for several reasons. It involves creating a new file in PIP format which contains other files. I figure out the method several months ago but I had to do several tests and rebuild the Symbian C++ code for launching the Flash Lite content.

Hack to disable Flash Lite auto screen orientation/rotation on Nokia 5800 (and others)04.23.09

It’s cool Nokia 5800 automatically rotates the screen to landscape/portrait according to phone orientation. However, you do not want that to happen always when developing Flash Lite applications. Apparently there is no way to disable this ‘freature’ directly from Flash Lite [1]. UPDATE: After my post, Nokia published a new platform service API to disable auto rotation. Please see here.

Below is a hack to disable auto rotation / orientation change from a Flash Lite project for Nokia 5800 (360×640 screen). It simply rotates the main Movieclip to rotate -90 degrees and back whenever an orientation change is detected. It’s not the perfect solution, however will keep you going until Nokia or Adobe fixes the real problem. (Note: You need a main Movieclip for this to work)

var stageSizeListener:Object = new Object();
stageSizeListener.onResize=function()
{
if(Stage.width > Stage.height) {
_root.main._rotation = -90;
_root.main._x = 0;
_root.main._y = 360;
} else {
_root.main._rotation = 0;
_root.main._x = 0;
_root.main._y = 0;
}
}
Stage.addListener(stageSizeListener);

Pasi posted a raelly nice article: Contacts Demo – S60 Platform Services API example. There is step by step guide and tutorial to prepare the Flash Lite app utilizing new S60 5ht edition Platform Services, and files for the source code. Kudos!

Here is my first Nokia S60 Platform Services API test with Adobe Flash Lite. This demo is designed to run 360×640 screens (like Nokia 5800 and N97). Application first loads contacts name, phone number, work and home addresses and shows all informations nicely in interactive scrollable menu.

How to enable Flash Lite screesavers on Nokia 5800 Xpress Music and many other phones03.26.09

Pikkoo Screensaver WallpaperApparently, Nokia decided to remove screensaver support on Nokia 5800 XPress Music (or S60 5th edition we should say?). As enjoying Flash Lite screensavers seems to be impossible natively, there is a small widget application enabling Flash Lite screensavers on 100 Nokia S60 phone models, including Nokia 5800 XPress music. With this widget application, it’s also possible to get unlimited free screensavers designed by users or yourself.

Below is the step by step guide on how to enable Flash Lite screensavers on S60 3rd and 5th edition devices, such as Nokia 5800 XPress Music or Nokia N73.

1. Download and install Pikkoo Screensaver Manager

2. Browse through screensavers on gallery, or create your own using Pikkoo Themes.

3. Note down the pCode (Pikkoo download code) of the screensaver you like

4. Run Pikkoo Screensaver manager on your phone, goto “Download” menu, enter the pCode code and download

5. Activate the screensaver. Voila!

Now you can enjoy the full power and fun of Flash Lite screensavers on your Nokia 5800 XPress music and many other phone models

PS. If you use twitter; I recommend you to follow Pikkoo.

EuroDNS domain registration and support review: FAIL03.23.09

We have been using GoDaddy as our main domain registrar happily since 2005. Recently we wanted to get an European domain with a different top level domain extension, that GoDaddy won’t offer. We came across to EuroDNS and the service looked credible at first sight. Being used to good support we receive from US companies (we have worked with Bluehost, GoDaddy and ServInt so far), I can say that EuroDNS is a total (support) disaster. Problem we had was about DNS, we never have had with GoDaddy or other registrar before.

Here I give you my top 7 reasons why not to use EuroDNS;

- EuroDNS will never tell you the exact problem. They will say that there is a problem, give you generic error description and ask you to contact your ISP
- EuroDNS will not necessarily read and understand your problem. When I asked that I have a DNS problem for a domain I registered 1 day ago; I was told to pay $25 + 1 year renewal fee in order to reactivate my domain. Because they thought I was talking about an expired domain (don’t ask me why)
- EuroDNS will never let you have a conversation. They will simply close a ticket as soon as they answer, and you will need to tell the problem from scratch. Again and again and again.
- EuroDNS will not bother giving you a new answer; instead they will copy & paste one of the old answers they gave before (they did that to me 3 times!!)
- EuroDNS will not necessarily answer you in English. Do not be surprised if you receive a text in French
- EuroDNS will never answer you on weekends. If you somehow have a problem on weekend, you have to wait some days before you get a hold of anyone.
- EuroDNS will never approach a problem as their own. If there is a problem, it’s either yours or your ISP’s; as they are perfect

I made a mistake to register a domain with EuroDNS. God knows what further problems I will have, since DNS problem is still open. I will surely share it as my story goes further with them. You, never ever get in there I recommend :)
