Photoshop.com mobile08.26.08

Today Adobe announced the availability of Photoshop for mobile.

Today we announced a new addition to the Photoshop.com family, Photoshop.com Mobile beta, which is a rich Adobe Flash based mobile application that offers camera phone users an easy way to upload, view, and share photos using their Photoshop.com account.  Photoshop.com Mobile runs in the background on the phone and allows consumers to take photos, send messages and run other applications while pictures are being uploaded to their Photoshop.com account.

It is currently available on 6 Windows mobile devices.

  • Samsung Blackjack I
  • Samsung Blackjack II
  • Motorola MOTO Q 9h
  • Motorola MOTO Q Music 9m
  • Palm Treo 700 w/wx
  • Palm Treo 750

Please not that this is not “Photoshop Mobile” but “Photoshop.com Mobile”, which means this application has nothing to do with image manipulation. Just a mobile picture uploader using Flash Lite technology (at the moment).

Another small note without a comment: If KuneriLite was used; this application could address 56 devices instead of 6.

Flash mobile device list for developers12.17.06

[Here is the quick link for the list]

It’s essential for every mobile developer to know their target mobile device profiles. This is the only way to ensure effective and reliable development plan and easier porting. That’s also been an issue for us and we often needed to collect technical information for all target devices we aim and up now did that manually combining different resources.

Flash Lite development and porting can be considered as ‘less complicated’ compared to Java and Symbian based platforms. However, that doesn’t change the reality that there is always the need to port. Especially after Nokia introduced S60 3rd edition devices, porting for Flash Lite got little more complicated, compared to S60 2nd edition’s (almost) the same 176×208 display size and specifications for most of the devices. One can claim here that; Flash Lite can scale and fit into different screens easily and that’s why Flash Lite is Flash Lite. Yes, that is true at first sight, however, unfortunately the fact that ‘it can’ doesn’t mean ‘it does’ well. Depending on the application, development will vary, and not everything will be displayed as expected or will perform good when they are scaled. Therefore, the only reasonable solution is to create different versions of the product for different possible screen sizes by defining target devices well and preparing a robust design to ease the pain of porting. To gain more insight about this issue, you can check Dale Rankine’s ‘Quickly create multiple versions of your Flash Lite content‘ article on Adobe web site.

Considering these facts and possible future needs, we prepared a list for developers to have a reference when developing Flash Lite applications. Initially there are only Nokia S60 and Series 40 devices, however, we hope to extend the list further with your help. Please register to our forum, and contribute to Flash mobile device list for developers. There is also performance information for all devices, which will be filled with tests performed by us and other developers.

When you visit the list, you will see some devices are in bold. Bold means that there is a confliction between Adobe and Nokia’s Flash Lite specifications or global knowledge. We hope to clarify these question marks to avoid future misleads for developers. If you happen to have a reliable information about these models, please add your comment on our forum.

We recently got the news that Adobe announced a public beta of Photoshop CS3 together with Device Central. Hopefully this will be a global solution for Flash mobile developers and eliminate further needs in future when things get more complicated with more devices available. However until then, we need clear and reliable information to reduce development risks and reliable marketing.

Photoshop CS3 with Adobe Device Central12.17.06

Adobe announced Device Central beta integrated to Photoshop CS3 public beta release. Adobe Device Central software, an all-new integrated component of Adobe Photoshop CS3, is designed to boost the efficiency and productivity of creative professionals and mobile developers who design engaging content for mobile phones and consumer electronic devices. If you’re a Photoshop user or graphical designer and interested in creating content for your phone or other phones, Device Central is a great way to get started and experiment.

With this integrated version of Device Central, Adobe gives the insight about how they are working to improve mobile content development workflow. There is also an unofficial support page to help beta users with any questions.

  • Quickly browse, search, and group device profiles
Learn about mobile devices prior to designing mobile content through Adobe Device Central. Built-in mobile and device profiles contain detailed information on supported content types (Flash Lite, bitmap, web, and video) as well as phone performance and form factor specifications. Directly compare multiple mobile devices along these dimensions. Browse and search device profiles according to phone manufacturer, carrier, screen size, and more. Group device profiles to create target device sets for mobile projects.
  • Preview and test mobile content on the desktop
Easily preview how your mobile content will look on each device in the context of mobile phone skins. Simulate mobile backlight and sunlight reflections to tune your content for different lighting conditions. Display your mobile designs in these same device skins to pitch or present work to clients from your desktop. Test and optimize your mobile content from Adobe Photoshop CS3 using the now extended “Save for Mobile & Devices” dialog.
  • Obtain free and regularly published device profile updates
Adobe will provide free updates of device profiles on a regular basis after Photoshop CS3 ships in spring 2007, as new mobile devices appear in the market. Device profiles will be available through both the Adobe Update Manager and www.adobe.com. Initially, Adobe Device Central will include select profiles for both mobile phones and consumer electronic devices that have been certified by Adobe for Flash Lite . Updated device profiles plug into Adobe Device Central and enable the same functionalities as built-in device profiles.
  • Start a new mobile project in Adobe Photoshop CS3.
Set up new documents in Adobe Photoshop CS3 tuned for mobile devices. Quickly switch from existing “New…” document and preset workflows to Device Central to specify your target devices and other relevant settings. Alternatively, start a new mobile document directly from within Device Central. Blank documents for mobile devices are created in Adobe Photoshop CS3 once you click on the “Create” button.
