How to create a website launcher for Symbian phones07.03.09

How easy it’s to start browsing a web site on your mobile browser? Launch the browser, type the address (how many clicks?), go! Well, if you want people to visit your web site; you have to make it easier to access. Many people will be way too lazy to type your address (especially if it’s long), if you want traffic, you have to make it dead simple. Then the question is: How? Now there is a new and handy tool for anyone to create website launchers for popular Symbian phones with WRT (Web Runtime Widget) support online.

1. Go to Website Launcher Generator

2. Specify your launcher widget’s name

3. Specify the URL to be launched

4. If you have one, upload an icon for the widget

5. Optionally, change the widget’s version number, and its unique ID

6. Click “Generate!” and download your new widget

Kudos to Alessandro, now we can offer our visitors to access our web site with one click from application menu.

On top of my wish-list; I have J2ME support, where you can create a J2ME based launcher for your website, which would let us to reach much more phones.

mobilize your website

Tube, S60 5th edition and Platform Services10.06.08

As you know, Nokia recently launched 5800 Xpress Music (aka Tube) couple days ago. Tube is not the first or last touch device Nokia has (check here). Only difference from previous ones seem to be the competition and platform.

Together with Tube, S60 5th edition is also revealed, which brings Platform Services enabling for Flash Lite (and WRT Widgets) to get more of the device and the system. From 5th edition on (or is it?), Flash Lite will be able to access:

Application manager

Calendar records

Contacts records

Log information

SMS and MMS messaging

The media gallery

Device location

Landmarks

System information

Sensors

Surely I will write my thoughts about these later on, but should first put my hands on. Meantime, check Sittiphol’s post and make yourself familiar with S60 5th edition.

Nokia N95 and N96 physical comparison09.25.08

To be honest, I have my eye on N96, but it’s so expensive at the moment and I have reasons to believe the firmware is not mature enough. So have to wait some more time until I win a contest or Nokia behaves gentle enough to gift me one ;) With all my curiosity, I came across to this N96 & N95 8GB comparison; which I wanted to take couple notes.

* N96 dual slider mechanics and buttons feel less secure than N95

* N96 has an extra physical key guard (keypad lock?) on top

* N96 has MicroUSB instead of MiniUSB. Apparently has advantages to Hardware manufacturer, how about end users? (Damn, cable fragmentation :) )

* Said that N96 has a worse camera button and doesn’t have a gallery button at all (anyone ever used Gallery button?)

* As many people agree N96 has a flip-out camera stand

* N96 build is said to be worse than N95. As I can see, it has N78 feel, which is the one of the worst Nokia industrial design classics.

As I say, I get it if someone gives it as a gift ;)

Japanese mobile market simple facts09.20.08

I came across to this: Unveiling the Japanese Mobile Market. It gives an overall picture of Japanese mobile market where mobile Internet usage is more popular than on the PC with reveled me some interesting details;

- Japanese mobile content market is 3.8 billion dollar, while the mobile commerce market is 6.6 billion.

- Japanese 3G connections can offer up to 7.2Mbps, while DoCoMo (biggest operator) is playing around with 1Gbps (4G).

- World’s first 3G connection is launched in Japan in 2001

- 90% of Japanese people have 3G or 3.5G devices, and older devices are not sold anymore.

- More than 80% of devices have Flash Lite player

Looks like Japan is an ideal condition as a mobile world. There are many things we can learn just looking and observing the market, although the culture is quite different than any other country in the world.

Mobile development goes web 2.0: SWFPack09.16.08

Today; I would like to make the introduction of a new innovation. I don’t use ‘innovation’ word to be cool or look corporate; I really mean it. I will try to make the value proposition in 3 short steps;

  1. Flash Lite developers have to pack their content for distribution
  2. Packaging is a hassle for developers on Windows, and impossible for Mac & Linux users
  3. SWFPack is a novel online service offering a cross platform, zero-install and easy to use Web 2.0 solution.

Yes, yet another innovation from Kuneri (like KuneriLite and KISS60). No installation, no prerequisites, no Windows jail, no SDKs, no set up struggles, no waiting, no payment.. Give your SWF file, SWFPack prepares your SIS file in a second. Can not be simpler; can not be faster; can not be easier.

SWFPack is scheduled to be released on 23rd October if everything goes fine. We just wanted to give a short introduction with a little sneak peek. Please check out current features and screenshots below, and we will be very happy to receive your feelings and even early feature requests ;)

Highlights

  • Cross Platform (Online; works on any modern browser)
  • No installation
  • Fast ( 1-2 seconds to compile )
  • Easy (Web 2.0 UI)
  • Cheap (Free, just sign up)

Photoshop.com mobile08.26.08

Today Adobe announced the availability of Photoshop for mobile.

Today we announced a new addition to the Photoshop.com family, Photoshop.com Mobile beta, which is a rich Adobe Flash based mobile application that offers camera phone users an easy way to upload, view, and share photos using their Photoshop.com account.  Photoshop.com Mobile runs in the background on the phone and allows consumers to take photos, send messages and run other applications while pictures are being uploaded to their Photoshop.com account.

It is currently available on 6 Windows mobile devices.

  • Samsung Blackjack I
  • Samsung Blackjack II
  • Motorola MOTO Q 9h
  • Motorola MOTO Q Music 9m
  • Palm Treo 700 w/wx
  • Palm Treo 750

Please not that this is not “Photoshop Mobile” but “Photoshop.com Mobile”, which means this application has nothing to do with image manipulation. Just a mobile picture uploader using Flash Lite technology (at the moment).

Another small note without a comment: If KuneriLite was used; this application could address 56 devices instead of 6.
