Shoot, play, upload videos with Flash Lite09.06.08

Pasi just released a new article of his “Testing KuneriLite” series: Take, play and send video file from Flash Lite to server.

In my earlier article I tested KuneriLite Camera plugin to take picture (klMode=picture). This time I tested it’s video support (klMode=video) to record video and store it to mobile phone. I modified a little my sources and it works very nicely in Nokia N95. This testing application sends videos to my server http://ptm.fi/temp/videos folder, so check you uploaded videos from there.

Turn your S60 device into a web SMS interface08.31.08

This one definitely worth the note. We have been investigating many times how to add SMS support to our web services (which you will see soon), but things looked quite complicated and expensive, each time we ended up changing our mind. But thanks to guys at Arctic Startup, now we know a nice, easy and free way to add SMS support to any web service using an S60 device and very simple logic: FromSMS from an Estonian startup FromDistance.

When your web application needs to send and/or receive SMS messages cost-efficiently, FromSMS is the solution for you. FromSMS offers a simple HTTPS POST interface for sending of SMS messages – all you need is an S60 mobile device with free FromSMS Client installed.
FromSMS supports multiple virtual device support, in case your S60 device, internet connection or something else start to suck. This is not free of charge, however would worth the price as reliability in return.

We will check this out and write our experience. Basically looks like what we need is an unlimited SMS plan, an S60 device plugged in to charge, a WLAN network and an account on the service. But we should investigate this more in details and test the security, reliability and usability of this service.

Enabling SIS downloads on web with PHP and ASP.Net08.31.08

Faisal prepared a nice tutorial explaining how to enable people to download SIS installers on your web site when you do not have access to chance MIME types manually. He provides examples on PHP and ASP.Net, and covers S60 1st, 2nd and 3rd editions, which should cover all cases out there.

In this article I will try to explain you how you can enable OTA (Over The Air) installation of SIS files from your own websites without any settings on server. Enabling OTA installs require you to set the correct MIME-Type on the server, so the mobile browser can recognize what kind of data server is returning and install the SIS correctly. You can manually set the the MIME-Type as described below on your webserver, however this article targets when you don’t have access to server settings for custom MIME-Types

How to create a Bluetooth chat application with Flash Lite08.16.08

Looks like we missed that nice tutorial when we were on holidays. Felipe tells you step by step how to create a Bluetooth chat application with Flash Lite and KuneriLite of Forum Nokia Wiki.

In this tutorial we will follow a step-by-step guide to create a chat by Bluetooth using Kuneri Lite. Kuneri Lite allows access to the S60 features (Bluetooth, GPS, Camera, …) that we haven’t access directly from Flash Lite.

Can Nokia be a good Internet company?08.06.08

All the buzz of MobileMe disaster of Apple, somehow reminded me Nokia willing to be an Internet company (or should I say trying?) As a respected Hardware and Software company (they still do great), do you think Nokia can make a good Internet company? Or would it be a too big piece to chew?

It’s not hard to see that Apple’s failure has much to do with a wrong strategy (i.e launching the service toghether with iPhone 3G). However, also shows that, brand, money, blindly attached fans are not enough to succeed on Internet, and even Americans can fail in that arena. I am sure that they will take their lesson and somehow will succeed to compensate. But how about Nokia? Finland is too far from US, not only in miles, but also in mentality, speed, approach etc. As a company, who hasn’t had any luck (or chance) in U.S market, will they be able to steal the heart of US consumers? If it’s true that Internet business goes through U.S, what kind of chance do they have?

I will not bring up statements. I haven’t thought deep on that, therefore at the moment this is just a question. I would like to learn how you think about Nokia brand together with Internet and take my thoughts deeper.
