10 facts you don’t know about Nokia08.29.06

Here are the 10 interesting things that you may not know about Nokia. It’s extracted from Wikidepia. Enjoy!

10) The name of the town of Nokia originated from the river which flowed through the town. The river itself, Nokianvirta, was named after the old Finnish word originally meaning sable, later pine marten. A species of this small, black-furred predatory animal was once found in the region, but it is now extinct.

9) Nokia is sometimes called aikon (Nokia backwards) by non-Nokia mobile phone users and by mobile software developers, because “aikon” is used in various SDK software packages, including Nokia’s own Symbian S60 SDK.

8) Unlike other modern day handsets, Nokia phones do not automatically start the call timer when the call is connected, but start it when the call is initiated. (Except for Series 60 based handsets like the Nokia 6600)

7) Nokia was listed as the 20th most admirable company worldwide in Fortune’s list of 2006 (1st in network communications, 4th non-US company).

6) In Asia, the digit 4 never appears in any Nokia handset model number, because 4 is considered unlucky in many parts of Southeast/East Asia.

5) The Nokia corporate font (typeface) is the AgfaMonotype Nokia Sans font, originally designed by Eric Spiekermann. Previously in advertising and in its mobile phone User’s Guides Nokia mostly used the Agfa Rotis Sans font.

4) The “Special” tone available to users of Nokia phones when receiving SMS (text messages) is actually Morse code for “SMS”. Similarly, the “Ascending” SMS tone is Morse code for “Connecting People,” Nokia’s slogan. The “Standard” SMS tone is Morse code for “M” (Message).

3) Nokia is currently the world’s largest digital camera manufacturer, as the sales of its camera-equipped mobile phones have exceeded those of any conventional camera manufacturer.

2) The world’s first commercial GSM call was made in 1991 in Helsinki over a Nokia-supplied network, by Prime Minister of Finland Harri Holkeri, using a Nokia phone.

1) The ringtone “Nokia tune” is actually based on a 19th century guitar work named “Gran Vals” by Spanish musician Francisco Tárrega. The Nokia Tune was originally named “Grande Valse” on Nokia phones but was changed to “Nokia Tune” around 1998 when it became so well known that people referred to it as the “Nokia Tune.”

Tale of a game05.11.06

Producing a good game is a challenging process. Independent of the size, it requires a good idea, clever design, strong development, extensive testing and the most importantly; effective marketing.

Platypus, a shot'em'right game by Squashy Software, is easily separated from other games. What makes Platypus different is its producing technique: It is completely produced using clay models. Great environment, sounds, playability and unique experience.

Anthony Flack; creator, designer and programmer of the whole game, published his story : The Making of Platypus. He tells the story from the first beginning. How he started to develop the game, how his house is burnt down (yes, thats true, burnt), plasticine shortage and many more. Although it was not a happy and fair end for him, I believe it is a good experience and motivation for him for his future projects. There is also behind the scenes of his techniques, its quite interesting, don't forget to visit.

Firefox for web developers05.07.06

Firefox is my favourite browser for long time, as it is for many intermediate to advanced users. The thing I like most with Firefox is that, it comes bare and stable, and I can extend it in my taste. That enables me to use it in the most efficient and personalized way. Furthermore, it has a portable version that I can carry everywhere with my own settings using a memory stick.

If you are a web developer you may like this post. It extends firefox with most useful and popular web developer extensions and gives short definitions of them. Eye dropper, link checker, screen capturer and HTML validator are some gripping ones.

Finnish style ass-kick05.05.06

Our main focus is mobile; mobile software, phones, interfaces, games and more. However, sometimes it is nice to distract and get out of focus to something other than mobile. Finnish style ass kicking game; Kick-ass Kung-fu is definetely not mobile! It requires a lot of space, a giant screen, social courage and much more effort than finger movements.

Kick-ass Kung-fu is developed by researches from Helsinki University of Technology (HUT) couple of years ago. I remember that these guys winning top-talent award in games category in last years. Stand in front of a giant screen and fight against your opponent. Movements are exaggerated, so that it is much more fun. You can beat up your favourite character, or get beaten by a giant game character in front of all your friends and many strangers.

Another interesting point that caught my attention is, the character people kick ass in most of the screenshots. Have you any guess who that favourite opponent is? (GWB would give a hint;))

Check their video for a their presentation.
