How to remove/hide annoying Facebook quiz notifications (and others)
With the last Facebook update, annoying quiz application notifications entered in our lives. It’s pretty annoying, not only I do not give any sh*t about a quiz someone takes, but also makes it very hard to see anything else. After some nerve breakdown and digging, I found the solution with the help of an insider tip ;)
1. You have to be a Firefox, Chrome, Opera or Safari user in order to makes this thing work.
2. Install GreaseMonkey add-on to your Firefox, GreaseMetal for Chrome, JS Utilizer for Opera or GreaseMonkey for Safari.
3. Click here to Install the Facebook Purity GreaseMonkey script (Kudos to Stephen for this amazing script. Do not forget to donate him if you find it useful)
4. There is no 4th step :)
If you like this post, please share it with your friends on Twitter, Facebook or Digg :)

Hi !
Lifesaving app. I was seriously considering deleting a bunch of people from my homepage, after the quiz spam started flooding the place.
Any way to limit the script’s effects to a given selection of apps ?
Best regards & thanks for sharing this,
Wouter

Thank you! It worked like a charm!
March 24th, 2009 at 4:44
It doesn’t work? I have firefox, I have greasemonkey (and it’s enabled), I installed the script, but I’m still seeing a homepage full of quizes and crap. What am I doing wrong?
March 24th, 2009 at 12:01
Great now all we need is something to make it like the pre march version or at least turn off all the crap (wall to wall)

THANK YOU!!!!!
You have changed my life – facebook was becoming unbearable but, all better now! I was actually starting to not like some of my friends because of those blasted quizzes – now, ignorance is truly bliss! There’s a special place for you in my heart …
March 26th, 2009 at 23:21
It doesn’t work for me. I have firefox and greasmonkey (enabled), but, I’m still seeing loads of quiz shite :(
Anyone know how to make this work?
March 27th, 2009 at 18:40
To Jungly Mark and Sof:
Installing GreaseMonkey is a 2 step process:
1) install GreaseMonkey plugin and restart your firefox
2) install the actual facebook quiz remover script into GreaseMonkey from this page
March 28th, 2009 at 14:43
it actually worked only for 5 minutes, and then all of those stupid quizzes reappeared :|
greasemonkey is active and says the script is enabled, but it just does not work anymore… any ideas?
March 28th, 2009 at 17:45
Are you on facebook.com or new.facebook.com? It’s weird only works for 5 minutes and then doesn’t; never has such problem. Did you try restarting FF?
March 28th, 2009 at 18:03
This fix was working perfectly for me when I installed it. “FB Purity blocked: 17 app msg/s [ Show ]” appeared under the word REQUESTS. I was able to toggle from Show to Hide with results as expected. Then I dealt with a quiz request under REQUESTS. When I went back to my home page, the word REQUESTS and my toggle statement were missing – - and all app posts were back. GreaseMonkey & FB Purity are still enabled. Help?
March 29th, 2009 at 20:52
update: it still don’t work and i’m on facebook.com.. got no clue
March 30th, 2009 at 20:05
update2: now it works perfectly, since the script has been edited: i had already edited it by myself and it worked and i was about to write about it here, then i noticed that the script author had already made the same change to it.
the problem was the “insert point” of the script, it’s now been changed to the People You May Know box, instead of the Request box, which does not appear in the home page when there are no pending requests.
anyway, now it works :D
March 31st, 2009 at 0:24
I removed Greasemonkey & FB Purity, adding them back when getting a new calendar request. “FB Purity blocked: 11 app msgs [ Show ]” now appears just above the words PEOPLE YOU MAY KNOW.

How it is possible to remove all old notifications from PROFILE. I have not found a possibility to filter my facebook-life history….
April 5th, 2009 at 2:52
Nope :( Still not working at all here.
I have Greasemonkey installed and enabled – I have cleared all existing Greasemonkey scripts, and re-installed this. It is not working at all.
How do I make this work?
April 5th, 2009 at 17:48
Try GreaseMetal, it’s similar to GreaseMonkey; same js should work on both
April 9th, 2009 at 20:40

April 12th, 2009 at 19:13
Ugor – Greasemetal is for Chrome – I use Firefox.
Again, I have Greasemonkey installed and enabled.
Anyone got any idea on how I can make this work?
April 13th, 2009 at 12:02
I would like to restate a question asked earlier, as I am also curious. So far this script has only had the chance to block quiz updates (which works like a charm I might add), but I’m wondering if it also blocks updates from other apps like Graffiti, and if so, if there’s a way to make it more specific. Thanks for the great script.
April 15th, 2009 at 3:00
You are a sanity-saver, my friend! (And your insider informant, too)

April 21st, 2009 at 23:50
It doesn’t work here either! It worked like a dream at first but after I signed in again all the quizes were there, again! :( And I have the both, Grease Monkey and the script, installed.
April 27th, 2009 at 8:28
The script is a godsend! I’m rather disappointed that Facebook didn’t have a feature built into the controls to enable users to disable these notifications. I could swear I was so willing to delete certain people from my list as they were literally publishing results every half hour!?
And there’s an option for not publishing the results, people! Spare us the rubbish and let us get back to what we signed up for – social-networking!
April 27th, 2009 at 11:28
I had already removed some quizzes, but the two that were left on my homepage are still there. I’ll check again this afternoon…

June 2nd, 2009 at 8:00
Hi there. This is working but only for quizzes in English. The ones people take in other languages seem to be unaffected :(
Any ideas? I have no clue of javascript.
June 2nd, 2009 at 9:53
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!
I notified Facebook users I would delete them, but after finding this I will change my mind.
June 4th, 2009 at 0:38
There is another solution. Tell the truth.
Tell every single one of your friends, that you think the quizzes are annoying and irrelevant to you. Say it in a nice way. Keep saying it in a nice way. Continue commenting on every single quiz they publish.
If they can’t appreciate your input, they are probably not someone you need as a friend. Or at least you then hide them from your newsstream.
I did this. It works – and you actually make a difference to the better in the eyes of all of your friends. I didn’t loose a single friend doing it.
June 4th, 2009 at 8:09
THANK YOU! you’re… awesome.
June 15th, 2009 at 15:29

I think Facebook have broken the script, because now it’s filtering everything! :(
June 24th, 2009 at 17:50
Mine’s filtering everything, too… Sadness, sadness, sadness! Just started about midnight.
June 24th, 2009 at 21:32
if you are having problems with the script filtering everything, just reinstall the script from the link above. You should be good to go.

July 16th, 2009 at 19:38
THANK YOU! Why do people take those quizzes anyway? I was really tempted to make my own quiz called “How bored am I?” that would always return “Really Bored!” after about 20 random questions.
July 22nd, 2009 at 12:00
That’s a cool tip!
Anyway, it’s not necessary to install the Facebook Purity GreaseMonkey thing as u can easily hide annoying quizzes from your Facebook Feeds page just by using the Hide application of Facebook itself!
If there is anyone or any application that you wish to hide, just click the Hide button on the right of each member’s name appearing on the Feeds update page. Then select either “Hide X” (the member) or just “Hide the application/quiz that s/he has just used/played”.
That’s it and you’re done!!! The hidden member(s) and/or the disturbing application(s) will no longer trouble you!
July 29th, 2009 at 10:56
The script doesn’t seem to be working again. News feed page s blank again!!!
July 29th, 2009 at 12:48
yea the script is not working again buddy.
July 29th, 2009 at 19:38
@Perit (#83): If you really enjoy having to do this for every single one of the endless quiz types that are constantly being generated, have at it.
I want no quiz information ever. Complete waste of my time.
July 29th, 2009 at 22:34
Maybe it’s one of the solutions.
Edit the javascript in greasemonkey,
search “parentNode.parentNode” and change all of them to “parentNode”,
save and it works.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:12
Thanks. The script is updated as per July 29th, 2009.. now it works fine again.
July 30th, 2009 at 19:13
I uninstalled yesterday, reinstalled today, still hiding the whole feed…
July 30th, 2009 at 19:42
Nublet. I forgot to remove the old script first. >.<
All is well, thanks for making facebook usable again!
August 5th, 2009 at 4:24
8/4/09 not working again even after updating the script not blocking all app messages and yes i did follow all the suggestions to fix it.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:33
i forgot to mention that it is not working in Firefox 3.5.2 it only blocked about 5 out of 19 app messages.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:45
seems it is blocking normal posts and not apps now after doing a hide unhide test blocked 1 normal post and none of the app mesages
August 28th, 2009 at 8:07
why install yet another application when all you have to do is click the little button which hides the quizzes? Yes you have to do it for each quiz but you soon find that people are pretty much doing the same quizzes over and over again… works for applications too….
You don’t play mafia wars or farmville or hammerfall??? then just hide the notifications and AMAZING you don’t see them anymore! And all that is built in to facebook –
You’re sick of getting invitations for SPP Pets or licking lollipops (or whatever) on the next invite instead of clicking the ignore button look a fraction lower and there is a block application button… you’ll never get another request from that application… again built directly into facebook…
Amazing stuff that you can do without the need for a specific internet browser or add-on to be installed.
August 28th, 2009 at 9:17
I use Chrome and it is not working. Greasemetal starts up and then disappears.
September 1st, 2009 at 10:29

September 4th, 2009 at 16:50
Thanks for sharing this, really useful tool!
September 5th, 2009 at 22:31
This is perfect!
I totally agree with “It’s pretty annoying, not only I do not give any sh*t about a quiz someone takes, but also makes it very hard to see anything else.”
Thanks so much!
October 10th, 2009 at 2:25
it’s easier (and more portable) to just click the (invisible until you hover over it) “hide” button, next to the quiz post, then you can chose to HIDE THE QUIZ without hiding the person.
Over time, you will kill off most of the quizes/games etc, and it won’t matter what computer you’re sitting at or what browser you use!
October 20th, 2009 at 16:04
Thank you, this is absolutely fantastic. You’re a lifesaver.
